In a major announcement, the Florida Department of Education said they have rejected 41% of proposed K-12 mathematics books intended for use during the 2022-2023 public school year. These books did not meet state academic standards due to their apparent inclusion of Critical Race Theory principles and other controversial approaches to education.

The statement from Florida’s Department of Education reads: “Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics.”

“The highest number of books rejected were for grade levels K-5, where an alarming 71 percent were not appropriately aligned with Florida standards or included prohibited topics and unsolicited strategies,” Florida’s D.O.E. added.

“It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) said in a statement.

In January 2020, The Daily Wire reported that “DeSantis announced new academic standards for the state, shoving out the Common Core standards that had been implemented in the state in 2010, just one year after he started pushing for jettisoning those standards.”

The new standards were titled, “Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking,” or “B.E.S.T.” According to the press release sent out Friday, Florida’s government had been straightforward in the instructions given to textbook publishers during the 2021 submittal process for the 2022-2023 school year, the first year “B.E.S.T” would be put into place:

In fact, FDOE proactively informed publishers in June 2021 that textbooks must align to the B.E.S.T. Standards, state laws regarding required instruction, and that they should not incorporate unsolicited strategies such as SEL in their instructional materials.

“We’re going to ensure that Florida has the highest-quality instructional materials aligned to our nationally-recognized standards,” Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran said in a statement.

“When it comes to education, other states continue to follow Florida’s lead as we continue to reinforce parents’ rights by focusing on providing their children with a world-class education without the fear of indoctrination or exposure to dangerous and divisive concepts in our classrooms,” Corcoran added.

DeSantis has long been an opponent of Critical Race Theory in classes. In June 2021, the governor called it “poison,” while adding that Florida was “happy to have banned it.”

While SEL has been around for decades, in recent years, many believe it has transformed into a vehicle for pushing many of the same principles of Critical Race Theory, such as the concept of equity, privilege, and systemic racism.

54 books out of 132 proposed books were rejected for K-12 classes.

Publishers do have an option to appeal the state’s decision.

“I’m grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team at the Department have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law,” DeSantis said in a press release.

  1. I am proud of Florida DOE for standing strong against instruction which should be taught in the home because it isn’t appropriate for teaching in public schools, particularly in grades k-6. Thank you Governor DeSantis and FDOE.

    1. Me too. The Feds are the blame as are teachers unions. The Feds have NO CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY in Education. The progressives, Socialists in Teacher’s Unions should be stripped of office.

  2. Thank you for standing up for our students. There is just things that should not be in students school books. Things that have nothing to do with teaching our children..

  3. Can someone please let me know how to get a list of the books rejected to share out to other states?

  4. Thank you Governor Ron DiSantis for the diligent responsible work you do to prevent any and all negative indoctrination of our kids. Thank God for a governor who has the courage to lead in what is right. Stand strong with us and for our kids. God bless you for that. There are still lot’s of folks like us who know that schools need to educate, not indoctrinate. Thank you so much.

    1. That won’t happen. They never mentioned some of the books they rejected they were wrong about and the publishers are refusing to print textbooks for them next year.

      1. Ron DeSatan is not only dangerous for our kids he is going to take Florida back 50 yrs educationally. He is insinuating his will in everyone’s lives whether they want him there or not.

  5. Thank you Governor Ron DiSantis for speaking out against the indoctrination of our kids. I went to a community festival in Tarpon Springs this weekend. There was music, Greek food, arts, crafts and home made goods. It was well attended and so good for the community of Tarpon Springs. People were having fun and enjoying each other’s talents. The bands were great. Both bands had gifted musician’s and singers that were black and white. The event was attended by many different races. We all had fun, enjoyed and respected each other’s talents, got along great and it was good for everyone, the community, the vendors, the performers and the families that came. This is the way it should be and our kids need to see us appreciating and respecting the talents of all people. Thank you for standing against CRT. Our kids don’t need to be indoctrinated into anything that goes against God’s command to love each other.

  6. l sure do wish SOMEONE would publish some of the things that are in Question as to wheather they should be in a School Text book ! Just a hand-full of examples would sure be nice so WE can judge !

  7. How is math books rejected as crt or emotional teaching . Read the article people. And it said some have been taught for decades and was fine. Why not now?

  8. This is absolutely the dumbest and most radical move imaginable. Most of you wouldn’t know “indoctrination” if it bit you….and it has. tRumplodytes!
